Jeffrey Ashcroft, in his article Black Arts: Renaissance and Printing Press in Nuremberg, 1493-1528, shows how the early stages of printing and the printing press coincide with, and may have even been contributory to the emerging recognition of and conception of terms for the "Middle Ages" and "Renaissance".
